In the Burji District of Ethiopia, less than 10% of the communities have access to a clean water. HareWenji village, with a population of ~4000, is one such community where the girls and women spend hours to fetch water from distant open-source water.
In October 2019, Grow East Africa partnered with Water Charity to bring clean drinking water to HareWenji village. The project involved replacing a broken hand pump with a sustainable submersible solar pump. The borehole water was pumped up a steep hill for a distance of one kilometer to the center of the village. The water was then pumped into an elevated storage tank and distributed using gravity.
This project has enabled school-age girls to spend more time on schoolwork, and the women to do productive shores. Moreover, the community will have minimum expenditure on the usage of the solar energy pump system.
